Reported by: Marissa Torres WCIA/WCFN Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @07:43pm CST SPRINGFIELD- A family is demanding action after their son nearly died in a flooded road.
It happened Thursday night on the out skirts of North West Sangamon County. A good portion of Irwin Bridge Road was completely under water because of flooding from the Sangamon River. Steve Bennett’s son was driving with 2 friends. They didn’t see the water until it was too late. Bennett says his son slammed on the brakes, but the current was just too strong. It picked up the front of the truck and carried it down the river. Luckily some tree branches stopped the truck and a rescue team was able to get the group to safety. Bennett says this whole thing could have been avoided if the township took the time to put up proper warnings. The only visible sign has vandalism written all over it. We weren’t able to reach Township officials, but neighboring Gardner Township is on the other side of the rescue sight. Crews there say they’ve tried putting up barriers, steel poles and signs; but people always throw them into the river or write on them. Gardner says it’s given up and latest rescue won’t convince to reinforce the area. |
