Reported by: Jenny Gastwirth/ WCIA 3 News Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @09:19pm CST CHARLESTON--EIU's assistant women's basketball coach Jackie Moore collapsed while working out Wednesday night. She died shortly thereafter from unknown reasons. Her team is having a hard time facing reality. They're too upset to talk on camera, but say she was more than a coach. She was a friend. Moore was someone who believed in them and pushed them to be their best every day. Just yesterday, the 28 year-old was running through drills at Lantz Arena. Hours later, she was rushed to the hospital. We're told that happened after she started a personal workout. The athletic department learned from doctors her heart just stopped. Students can't believe she's gone. "Gotta take advantage of every single day and make sure you know what you're doing with yourself," said Rachel McDermott. "I really hope her family and her loved ones are doing okay and my thoughts go out to them."
An autopsy should help determine an exact cause of death. All athletic events are canceled this weekend out of respect for Moore. A memorial service is planned for Sunday afternoon at Lantz Arena. It'll begin at 2. |
