Reported by: Marissa Torres WCIA/WCFN Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @06:50pm CST SPRINGFIELD- Social service agencies across Illinois say the lack of state funding is creating what they call a “perfect storm.” Agencies say the state owes them hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Comptroller’s office says their hands are tied- they’re sitting on about $4 billion of unpaid bills. Most of which are meant for Social Service agencies. State officials say the revenue isn’t coming in and the money just isn’t there. One solution came up months ago when Governor Pat Quinn agreed to borrow about $3.5 billion to pay pensions and free up money for social services. That process has yet to start; the Governor’s office says he’s aiming for January. Until then people will just have to wait. The Comptroller’s office says some agencies are getting payment, but it’s only on an emergency basis. |
