Reported by: Jenny Gastwirth WCIA 3 Tuesday, Feb 12, 2008 @10:25pm CST University of Illinois veterinary students stopped by with furry friends to bring comfort and hope to children in need. These kids spend hours upon hours hooked up to IVs and just a few minutes with a dog can lift their spirits. A 12 year-old girl we hung out with not only got a visit from a real life therapy dog, but she also got a plush companion to keep her company at all times. Vet students raised money to buy these dogs to give young patients something to hold onto and feel safe with. A storybook came with the stuffed goldens to remind the little ones they'll be okay. "I think most children enjoy animals and they enjoy being around them and I think it actually helps in the healing process," said Kathy Strehlow, a mother of one of the children visited. "It's just someone to talk to, to comfort them and I think it really shows a lot more of the emotional connection that people and children have to animals," said vet student Rachel Shaff. The Josh kits were designed by a vet whose daughter was cooped up in a hospital bed and missed her golden Josh. That was 14 years ago and since then people have been delivering josh dogs to sick children across the country so no child is ever alone in the hospital.
