Reported by: Dave Benton / WCIA 3 Monday, Oct 19, 2009 @02:50pm CDT RANTOUL - It may have been random, but it's happened more than once. Police have increased patrols, but need your help stopping the violence. In Crime Watch tonight, a group of teenagers have been targeting people walking alone. The most recent case was last month. A 30-year old man was walking home. He was near the high school on East Congress Avenue when he saw a group of teenagers. He went to walk around them when one asked why he was walking alone. Marcus Beach with the Rantoul Police Department says, "One of the subjects punched him in the back of the head which knocked him to the ground. Several other subjects began to kick and punch him." After a few minutes, the offenders took off. They may have been scared away by other people in the area. Police have talked to several witnesses who saw what happened. Similar attacks happened last summer and investigators have been talking to teens in the areas where there's been trouble. The victim was treated for his injuries. If you have any information, call Champaign County Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS. You can also send in a text tip on your cell phone or a web tip . You don't have to give your name or testify in court and a reward is offered. |
