Reported by: Kalee Dionne/WCIA 3 News Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 @05:01pm CDT CHAMPAIGN, IL--We are often told to stay out of the sun and away from the tanning salons, but a new study says otherwise.
There are approximately 3,000 research studies, and this past July several doctors across the country came up with the result. The conclusion suggest some exposure can actually prevent cancers, such as; colon, breast, and prostate cancers. A billboard on S. Neil Street in Champaign is making people aware of the new findings. The billboard says, "Vitamin D from the Sun and Tanning Beds can reduce your risk of Breast Cancer up to seventy-five percent." Local tanning salon, Classic Tan, is promoting the awareness of this new study. The owner, Don Kermath, says tanning beds won't prevent cancer, but you can get you daily amount of Vitamin D from tanning. Doctors say that tanning for Vitamin D is a bad idea. They say you can get the amount of Vitamin D needed by the things you eat and drink on a normal basis. Also, that tanning in tanning beds just accelerates the risk of getting skin cancer. |
