Reported by: Tinisha Shade WCIA 3 Thursday, Jan 10, 2008 @03:54pm CST Anyone with children knows how expensive diapers are. But did you know every baby in disposable diapers creates one ton of garbage each year by themselves? One mom in Bloomington says she wants to change that one cloth diaper at a time. Sarah Gesiakowski says when she decided to open her cloth diapering business she never imagined so many people would take interest. Aside from looking super stylish she says statistics also bring in many budget conscious families. Gesiakowski says, “A cloth diaper family is going to use between 24 and 70 diapers across their entire span of birth to potty training. That's a very average family whereas a new born baby is going to use between 70 and 90 diapers in its first week.” Economics and fashion aren't the only draw. Rocio Rivadeneyra, one of Sarah's clients has twins in cloth diapers. She's glad to be saving money but also feels good about doing her part to help the environment. Rivadeneyra says, “That first year of my daughters life, we were putting an extra garbage can each week just for diapers. When we switched to cloth we went back to one garbage can. And even now with a family of five it's still just one garbage can and our recycling bin.” The best part? The positive impact one family's choice is making worldwide. The real diaper association estimates parents will spend nearly 3-thousand dollars on diapers from birth to potty training. Sarah says she can do the same for as low as 300 bucks.
