Reported by: Jenny Gastwirth/WCIA 3 News Tuesday, Sep 15, 2009 @10:07pm CDT FORD CO.--It was one of the largest drug busts police can remember in Ford County and it happened Friday afternoon in rural Roberts. Police aren't saying much. People I spoke with say they saw small planes circling town late last week and sheriff's deputies on foot. They had a search warrant for a cornfield. Federal drug enforcement agents helped them comb their way through. You can see track marks on the ground. They spent several hours clearing out hundreds of marijuana plants. No one knows who planted them. People in town say it's wrong thinking you won't get caught. "If they had it like out in the middle of the cornfield, they might not be able to see it, but still what if farmers came out," asked Sharon Key. "They're going to see it and as soon as they do their harvest, they're going to know it's there."
The sheriff says it's the largest amount of marijuana he's seen during his 19 year career. No arrests have been made. Investigators aren't saying a whole lot beyond that. They are tracking down leads and want anyone with information to come forward. This isn't the first time this month we've heard about marijuana in farmland. A Thawville couple is accused for growing more than 2-thousand cannabis plants in Iroquois County. |
