Reported by: Dave Benton / WCIA 3 Monday, Aug 31, 2009 @02:54pm CDT CHAMPAIGN - Stealing stuff from a house when people are home is daring. But homes in one neighborhood have proven to be easy targets. In Crime Watch tonight, police need your help to stop a recent rash of break-ins. It started in July and continued in August. Police are investigating several break-ins in the Greencroft neighborhood. That's south of the Champaign County Club and northwest of Prospect and Kirby Avenues. Investigators say whoever's doing this is having a fairly easy time of it. They've gotten in through unlocked doors and windows. And in one case, they used a garage door opener to get in. They're taking anything they can. Benjamin Newell with the Champaign Police Department says, "Items that have been taken: cash, a lot of electronics, laptops, cell phones, cameras; often times things just left out in the open." All the burglaries have happened late at night or early in the morning. Police remind homeowners to keep all doors and windows locked especially the door in from the garage. If you have any information about these cases, call Champaign County Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS. You can also send in a text tip on your cell phone or a web tip . You don't have to give your name or testify in court and a reward is offered. |
